Indicative – Pluperfect in Spanish

The Pluperfect mainly deals with actions completed before something in the past. It expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific period of time in the past.

Examples:

Affirmative Form:

Ella había visto esa playa antes (She had seen that beach before)
Yo entendí la película porque había leído el libro (I understood the movie because I had read the book)
¿Ellos habían visitadoUU. antes de 2006? (Had they visited USA before 2006?)
El niño había tenido la oportunidad de ver varios animales (The boy had had the opportunity to see several animals)
Nosotros habíamos trabajado hasta medianoche (We had worked until midnight)
Vosotros habíais viajado muy temprano (You had traveled very early)

Negative Form:

Ella no había visto esa playa antes (She hadn’t seen that beach before)
Yo no entendí la película porque no había leído el libro (I didn’t understand the movie because I hadn’t read the book)
¿Ellos no habían visitadoUU. antes de 2006? (Hadn’t they visited USA before 2006?)
El niño no había tenido la oportunidad de ver varios animales (The boy hadn’t had the opportunity to see several animals)
Nosotros no habíamos trabajado hasta medianoche (We hadn’t worked until midnight)
Vosotros no habíais viajado muy temprano (You hadn’t traveled very early)
